At our agency, we don’t just build websites and apps, we help our clients make smart technical choices that align with their business stage. Because the truth is: the “wrong” stack can quietly drain resources, while the “right” stack keeps you lean, fast, and focused.
The Challenge
One of our clients was running their product on Postgres hosted with AWS RDS. Following AWS’s recommendations, they went for a Multi–AZ instance, the kind usually suggested for large, production-ready workloads.
On paper, it made sense: high availability, reliability, enterprise credibility. But in practice? Their workload was inconsistent. The feature that justified the setup hadn’t yet picked up traction, and the AWS bills rolled in regardless.
Within two months, database costs had ballooned into something unsustainable.
The Solution
Instead of sticking with an overpowered (and overpriced) setup, we guided them toward Neon, a serverless Postgres solution. Here’s why:
- Pay-per-usage model → Perfect for spiky or unpredictable workloads.
- Scales down to zero → No unnecessary idle costs.
- Still Postgres → No migration headaches for the development team.
The Results
The shift was dramatic:
- AWS RDS (Multi-AZ) → Enterprise-grade, but 10x the cost.
- Neon (Serverless Postgres) → Just 1/10th the cost, while still reliable and production-ready for their current needs.
The Lesson
This wasn’t about “cheap vs. expensive.” It was about fit. The right stack for a startup testing features isn’t the same as the right stack for a global-scale SaaS. By aligning the technology with the actual workload, our client freed up budget to invest in growth instead of burning cash on infrastructure.
Because in the end, the right stack doesn’t just power your product, it protects your runway.
